Personality
Shugak is a very contemplative character. He likes peace, quiet and appreciates the beauty and complexity of nature. He is quite paranoid about smugglers and being recognised by them after his daring escape from their capture - this makes him quite withdrawn sometimes. He also gets a terrible temper when he thinks the island or tribe are in danger - when he can totally lose it and fly into a dangerous rage, becoming whatever form is appropriate uncontrollably.

History
Shugak is part of an island tribe, which inhabits an unexplored and often un-visitable small island far out to sea. They have the skill to morph into any form - this has been practiced and passed on down the generations. The tribe spent most of their time as equines - in order to have a constant food supply in the form of the meadows and woods, and to be able to quickly cross large areas of the island. The enhanced hearing, sight and strength allowed them to fight off predators and keep a close eye on each other.
One day the sea was unusually calm, and a group of explorers keen to claim this incredible skill as their own managed to moor their ship and climb onto the land.
Knowing of this magical skill that the tribes-people possessed, they captured the nearest tribe member they found. This happened to be Shugak, at the time an 18 year old gathering fish from the tribe's shallow nets. Having not encountered other people than those in his tribe before, he did not expect them to be hostile and was taken by surprise.
In the dark, damp hold of their ship, he began to plot. He morphed himself into a mouse, and scurried through the gaps and cracks in the old ship. Once positioned outside the door of the pirates' cabin, he turned into an angry boar, knocking down the door and gauging at the men inside. He ran rampage around the cabin, overturning tables and tearing up maps, before jumping ship and becoming a whale. From under the ocean, he cut the rope attached to the ship's anchor with his giant maw and used his considerable bulk to shove the boat into the nearby ocean current.
Knowing it would be washed up days later somewhere far away, he went back to the island - but is forever worried about them coming back - all it would take is another unusually calm sea. Realizing that his captors knew his face and would recognize him, he avoided his human form and roamed the island as whatever animal took his fancy.
